Biographies

Mavis Bates, L.Ac.     

Mavis was head of the Education Committee for the Fox Valley Earth Day Celebration held in 1990. She was on the Solid Waste Advisory Committee which invented the volume based recycling program for the City of Aurora. She was also the steward of the Aurora Prairie. She is a member of the Sierra Club. Mavis volunteers in the community as a member of the board of directors of Mutual Ground, Kiwanis, the Aurora Democrats, and is editor of the journal of the Illinois Association for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Mavis Bates is a Licensed Acupuncturist practicing in Aurora, Illinois. She has a thriving practice which is celebrating its seventh anniversary this year. She received her MSTOM, Master’s of Science of Traditional Oriental Medicine, from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, an intensive, four-year medical school program. She is certified by the NCCAOM (National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) and is a diplomat in both acupuncture and herbal medicine. She also holds a Doctor of Naturopathy degree, specializing in western herbs. She is retired from Lucent Technologies and was the founding director of the Fox Valley Montessori School elementary program.

Cynthia Allen          

Cynthia Allen grew up in Aurora. She graduated, a National Merit Scholar, from East High School in 1968. After attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Cynthia worked for 40 years as a chemical researcher. She recently retired after 36 years with Amoco.

Cynthia is one of the founders of Mutual Ground, Inc and has served on its board almost her entire adult life. She has also been active in local politics and community activities. Cynthia served on the Fox Valley Montessori School Board and was instrumental in getting the school increased to its current preschool through 6th grade curriculum.

Cynthia has volunteered with Aurora Green Fest for all four years of its existence. This is her fourth year as Vendor Chair.
